Whenever the original Exorcist movie comes up in conversation, I can’t help but tell the story about how my parents went to see it back in 1973 after it debuted in theaters. My mother, and seemingly everyone else on the block who saw it, were so terrified, they slept with the lights on all week. Fast forward a few decades, and the movie is still keeping the lights on for those too terrified to admit its horrific influence.

While there are several sequels and prequels that failed to live up to the originals success, I have long since heard rumors about the underrated Exorcist III. A movie written and directed by the original author, William Peter Blatty. Horror fans have shredded the first sequel as unwatchable garbage, but part three always seemed to get sort of a cult following. So I decided to give it a chance, and while I didn’t sleep with the lights on, I was still a bit surprised at just how solid a movie this turned out to be.

Right off the bat, the movie drew me in with its connections to the original film. There was also a pacing to this film that gave me a sense of unease, as if something wasn’t right. Not just with the story, but with the film itself. There was a bizarre aura of uncharted territory, which is always a good thing. Especially when watching a horror movie. I was pleasantly surprised with every direction the movie was taking me, as none of the traditional horror tropes were being used as cheap gags to lure in the audience.

While there are a few jumpy moments seasoned throughout the film, its truest star shines brightest in the guise of legendary Chucky actor Brad Dourif. His performance was beyond maniacal in all the right ways. In fact, I cannot think of a performance equally as intense and disturbing. I’m sure there are plenty of contenders out there, but given how fresh the movie still is within my own head, Dourif has simply overtaken any competition that would regularly come to mind.

I’m weary to give away any plot details, as I feel the less you know going into this, the better. I would definitely classify it as a true follow up to the original film, but it is without question strong enough to stand on its own merits. If you are seeking out something scary to watch this spooky season, do not hesitate to give this movie a shot.
